The term “420” originated in 1971 with a group of Marin County high school students who met regularly at 4:20pm to search for an abandoned weed crop. Their meeting spot: a statue of Louis Pasteur built for the WPA by SF anti-fascist and radical bohemian Benny Bufano

Two of Bufano’s “peace missiles,” his sculpture of Sun Yat-sen, and a sculpture of a bear he intended to donate to the Free Speech Movement. Bufano believed art should be “big enough to belong to everybody, too big for anyone to put in his pocket”

If you’re celebrating, remember to spark one for Benny
