On August 24 1970 the first issue of the bilingual community newspaper, El Tecolote, was published and distributed throughout the Mission. The paper emerged from a collective senior project in Prof. Juan Gonzales’s La Raza studies course at San Francisco State University
After a year of operation, the paper moved out of SF State and into the Mission. Quickly expanding throughout the city, for 52 years now El Tecolote (@eltecolotesf) has provided a much needed independent media outlet for San Francisco’s Mission district and Latino community.
