90 years ago, July 12 1933, the last of five Watsonville lettuce workers who had been facing deportation for their roles in labor agitation won his freedom in a San Francisco court. The workers were successfully defended by the Communist Party’s International Labor Defense

The 5 targeted workers were all members of the communist-led Cannery & Agricultural Workers Industrial Union. CAWIU members in Watsonville, who were almost entirely Mexican & Filipino, struck the fields in May in response to repeated attacks by racist mobs
