56 years ago, March 6 1968, Buddy Clark and Richard Kunst, of antiwar group The Resistance, refused induction at the military’s Oakland Induction Center. After passing out his statement, Clark was beaten by 4 inductees in the toilet of the bus from Santa Rosa to Oakland

In Oakland, Clark and Kunst burned their draft cards before a cheering crowd of 100, who sang songs and ate homemade gingerbread

The Resistance was founded by 4 draft resisters (former Maoist Progressive Labor Party member Steve Hamilton, Lennie Heller, and SNCC Freedom Summer veterans David Harris and Dennis Sweeney) who sought to turn individual acts of resistance into a coherent, organized movement
