51 years ago, Jan 9 1971, the Chicano Revolutionary Party held a Free Breakfast Program Benefit featuring the Black Panther Party band, The Lumpen, at the Erwin & Taylor Memorial Hall in East Oakland. The benefit funded several jointly run BPP and CRP free breakfast programs

The Chicano Revolutionary Party (El Partido Revolutionario Chicano) began organizing in Oakland’s Fruitvale neighborhood in 1968. Inspired by and working with the panthers, they ran various community programs and free breakfast programs for children, and organized police patrols

In 1971, the CRP began publishing their own community newspaper out of East Oakland, La Chispa. Their office in Fruitvale became a social hub for militant action, community meetings, and events like the concert put on with the Black Panther Party

You can listen to The Lumpen’s popular song (performed that January night), “Free Bobby Now,” from their 1970 EP “Seize the Time” here: https://t.co/7KNERK9Zyz
