50 years ago, April 28 1974, riots erupted in Union City’s predominantly Latino Decoto neighborhood over the police killing of Alberto Terrones Jr. ten days earlier

Terrones had been killed after stealing three canned hams from a Lucky Supermarket in Hayward. Local residents told newspapers the rioting, which reportedly did about $10,000 in damage, was a result of outrage over Terrones’ death

In June, the police held a community meeting to calm tensions. At the meeting, gunmen assassinated Union City Chief of Police William Cann. The Chicano Liberation Front later claimed responsibility, but in 1981 three members of the Brown Berets were prosecuted for the killing
