48 years ago, July 21 1975, a bomb exploded at the ATF bureau office on the 34th floor of the Tishman building, 525 Market, in San Francisco. The Red Guerrilla Family issued a communiqué claiming responsibility for the bombing, done in retaliation for the murder of Popeye Jackson
The bomb went off at 10PM. At 9:37 the RGF contacted the Associated Press to communicate the time, location, and magnitude of the explosion so the building could be evacuated. The details were shared with the police but workers in the building were not warned or evacuated
The RGF issued a second communiqué apologizing to the workers in the Tishman building for putting their lives in danger. Detailing their exact evacuation orders, they assured readers that they would do better to protect workers lives in future bombings
While it’s unclear who was responsible for the killing of Jackson, the RGF suspected that the ATF had played a major role. Less than a week before he was killed, the SF head of the ATF announced that 100 new agents would deploy to the West Coast for counter-insurgency operations
It was later discovered that Tribal Thumb, a group heavily suspected of having various links to the FBI, was involved in the murder of Popeye Jackson https://t.co/xpnwh44csx
@lesuperburp Lots of sources on this (thread was written 3 years ago so they’re not ready-to-hand atm) but the main source was a multi-part investigation the Berkeley Barb published in the 1970s. If you DM us we can send you links
