46 years ago, Aug 26 1975, the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency (SFRA) postponed the sale of two buildings in Japantown after the Committee Against Nihonmachi Eviction (CANE) kept 20 prospective buyers out by padlocking the doors and picketing the buildings for several days

CANE was formed in 1973 by young Japanese-American activists who sought to fight the “dispersal and destruction of the Japanese community,” drawing a direct comparison between the SFRA’s relocation of Japantown residents and the “internment” of the 1940s

Although CANE achieved many small victories, their fight against gentrification and for “community control” (which involved an alliance between residents and local small business) in Nihonmachi/Japantown was ultimately unsuccessful
