40 years ago, April 16 1984, mounted police attacked a crowd of 1,500 Latin America solidarity demonstrators who were protesting a Commonwealth Club speech by Henry Kissinger at the Hilton in San Francisco. 150 demonstrators were arrested, and one woman was trampled by a horse

The crowd, which included a sizable punk contingent, chanted “CIA out of Nicaragua!” while some threw rocks at the police. The demonstration did not successfully disrupt Kissinger’s speech to the Commonwealth Club
